Headlight Control Module & Xenon Ballast Failure: Symptoms, Causes and Solutions

There are many reasons why your car headlight bulbs may fail. Maybe it’s because of the headlight control modules or perhaps the Xenon/HID ballasts are failing themselves. Symptoms of a failing headlight control module

How can you tell if your headlight control modules or Xenon/HID ballasts are starting to fail? Pay attention to how your car headlight bulbs behave when you switch them on and after they’ve been running for a while. Watch out for these symptoms:

  • One or both headlights start flickering after warming up.
  • Your headlights take several seconds or a few attempts to ignite.
  • One headlight works normally while the other doesn't turn on at all.
  • The lights switch off unexpectedly before coming back on.
  • One of your headlights is obviously more yellow or more pink than the other.
  • There’s a burning smell around the lighting components in the engine bay.
  • Visible corrosion and scorch marks or other forms of physical damage on the module.
  • You’re getting a warning for a lighting fault on your dashboard.

These symptoms can point to a failing ballast or control module, although some can also come from the bulb itself or another part of the lighting system.

Why would your Xenon headlights fail?

Your Xenon or HID ballast usually won’t fail out of nowhere. In many cases, something has been putting stress on the headlight control module or ballast over time.

Electrical stress or power surges

Your ballast and headlight control module contain sensitive electronics. While manufacturers design these components to cope with normal changes in your vehicle's electrical supply, unusually high voltage can damage them.

A faulty alternator and an incorrect jump-start or even incompatible aftermarket electrical equipment can create voltage spikes that overwhelm the module’s protective components. In some cases, the resulting damage can permanently stop your car headlight bulbs from working.

Moisture and corrosion

Water getting into your headlights can quickly become a problem, especially when it reaches the ballast or control unit. When that happens, you could end up with corrosion or an electrical short that stops the system from working properly.

Even a small leak can cause trouble over time. Worn or damaged seals can let moisture collect inside the headlight, and exposure to road salt can make corrosion happen even faster.

Heat damage

HID headlights naturally get hot when you use them, and your car’s lighting system is designed to deal with that heat. But when there isn’t enough airflow, the heat gets trapped around the components and pushes temperatures higher than they should be.

Heat from nearby engine components can add to the problem. Over time, repeated exposure to high temperatures can damage capacitors and other electronic components inside your headlight control modules.

Age and wear

Sometimes, your headlight components simply reach the end of their working life.

Every time you drive, the components inside the module go through heating and cooling cycles. Capacitors and transistors gradually deteriorate through years of use, so you’ll eventually notice ballast failure symptoms as they do.
